Is London About to Get a New Mega Casino?

London already has nearly 30 casinos, but local officials believe that there’s room for one more.

The City of Westminster Council is currently considering plans to build a £100 million “mega casino” adjacent to the famous Leicester Square.

A hotel and 35 occupied apartments currently lie on the site that is earmarked for the casino, but the building has become in dire need of some TLC, making it a prime target for redevelopment and regeneration.

The mega casino, which will likely feature popular table games like blackjack and roulette, as well as large numbers of online slots, would be just part of the new building if plans are approved. The building will also be used to house a hotel, cinema, and 24 affordable homes.

In March 2021, City of Westminster cabinet members considered seven different options for the existing building which is known as Huguenot House. These included maintaining the existing building, selling it to a developer, or converting existing office space into new apartments.

Councillors still need to jump over many more hurdles before construction can begin, but if they are successful, building work could begin in 2025.
