It’s official: the 2020 Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) is under way. Here’s your first daily update of what happened in the SCOOP universe…

BEHIND THE HEADLINES
Events two, three and four got under way on the opening day of SCOOP, and each attracted enormous numbers. In the Mini Thursday Thrill, with a $22 buy-in, 27,948 players built a prize pool of $558,960, more than $250K above the $300K guarantee. The pattern was repeated through every event, with the high buy-in version amassing a $1.15 million prize pool, breaking the $1 million mark on the opening day.
After nine hours, 20 minutes of play in Event 4-L: $11 NLHE, SCOOP crowned its first champion when “papadatos69” of Greece prevailed from a field of 19,588 entries. The victory came after a three-handed deal, in which Norway’s “Fixxxr6_” actually took the most money, banking $15,869.35 to papadatos69’s $15,084.11. But it’s only papadatos69 who can call himself opening day SCOOP champion.
Decent start for Andras “probirs” Nemeth
Online superstar Andras “probirs” Nemeth is leading the high buy-in version of Event 4, which paused overnight with 35 players left and $95,000 on the line for the winner. He is also sitting fifth of the 35 still involved in the high buy-in PLO event, with $101K up top. For good measure, Nemeth is 66th of 95 left in Event 3-M, guaranteed another cash. (Just to complete the picture, Nemeth finished 76th in Event 2-H, out of the money, but winning his buy-in back in bounties. He whiffed in the medium version. The shame.)
Brazilian players will inevitably feature regularly in the top echelons in these SCOOP tournaments, with the South Americans a hot favourite to come out on top in the countries leader board. On the opening night, “Williaml666” bagged the first title, coming out on top of a Brazilian 1-2. “guilherme12” was beaten into second place. Williaml666 won $69,061.24 from the $109 buy-in event.
